Name: Dr. Kathy Wilson-Humphrey
Title: Senior Vice Chancellor for Engagement and Secretary of the Board of Trustees Company: University of Pittsburgh
Industry: Higher Education
- Why did you choose this profession?
I wanted to be a beacon for others by inspiring and encouraging young women of color to not be afraid to dream big and to have bold goals for themselves. I consider my profession to be a calling.
2. What role has the support of other women played in your success?
In every season of my career, there was a woman playing a significant role in my development. I encourage every young woman to seek a strong mentor that is not only willing to mentor, but is passionate about pouring their time and experience into their academic and professional development.
3. What does receiving this award mean to you?
To be spotlighted amongst such exceptional women is an honor. The thought that someone nominated me for this award is incredibly humbling.
4. What advice would you give to other women who want to go into your field?
Be determined to make a difference. To do so, you must be passionate and know that you were created for this purpose. You must be fearless, strong, dedicated, and firmly committed to the cause of transforming lives for the better. Above all, you must have humility and a capacity to forgive.
5. What would you tell other women about overcoming obstacles?
You must decide that you are going to overcome this obstacle; every day is a fresh start. You must be determined that you will not be beaten, even when it looks like you are losing. In times of difficulties, believe that the sum total of your current status does not determine who or what you are going to be.
6. How have you evolved over the years?
I have never been afraid of self-evaluation. Therefore, I am consistently evolving. I am always trying to learn and get better. I am always trying to understand how to improve myself, so I look for ways and opportunities that are going to stretch me and help mold me into a better version of me. We are all a work in progress. I strongly believe that if you are not evolving, you are not growing.
