What role has the support of other women played in your success?
Women are powerful allies as they understand how to balance the mind and the heart in helping others striving toward mutual success. Women are strong collaborators who pour into others and then celebrate their success. Some of my most invaluable and impactful mentors throughout my career have been women.
What would you tell other women about overcoming obstacles?
Surround yourself with people who support, encourage and help you move obstacles out of the way of your success. Cultivate peers as powerful mentors and sponsors as they will help you push yourself beyond your own expectations. Never be afraid to ask for help and then remember to share the spotlight with others once those obstacles have been conquered.
How have you evolved over the years?
My understanding of the power and importance of servant leadership for supporting people and organizations along pathways to success has increased over the years. Also, being tested by the experiences of life and leadership has shown me how important faith is for understanding purpose, and what it means to do good work.
Dr. Murrell is also an editor of the book: Diversity Across the Disciplines: Research on People, Policy, Process, and Paradigm
Diversity research and scholarship has evolved over the past several decades and is now reaching a critical juncture. While the scholarship on diversity and inclusion has advanced within various disciplines and sub-disciplines, there have been limited conversations and collaborations across distinct areas of research. Theories, paradigms, research models and methodologies have evolved but continue to remain locked within specific areas, disciplines, or theoretical canons. This collaboratively edited volume examines diversity across disciplines in higher education.
