This year, our theme is “And Still We Rise!” We asked our honorees to reflect on how they have risen above challenges—both professionally and personally. Their responses honor the obstacles they faced, the strength they discovered, and the determination that carried them forward.
“For me, rising in the midst of challenges begins with an unshakable faith in God and an unwavering commitment to creating a better life for my children and grandchildren. As the owner of a thriving event venue and decorating design company, I have learned that true leadership is forged not in moments of ease but in seasons of perseverance. When faced with obstacles—whether personal setbacks or the unpredictable demands of entrepreneurship—I lean on my faith to find clarity and strength. I believe that every challenge carries a purpose, which pushes me to keep moving forward with grace, courage, and determination. Michelle Johnson is a woman of faith, vision, and perseverance. She is the proud co-owner and CEO of H.O.T. Designs Studio, a flourishing event venue and event decorating design company, where she transforms her creativity and passion into memorable experiences that bring people together in celebration.
Before stepping into entrepreneurship, Michelle built a distinguished career spanning more than 20 years in business, finance, and research accounting at the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC. Her extensive professional experience instilled in her the discipline, leadership, and strategic insight that continue to shape her success as a business owner today.
Michelle holds an Associate Degree in Business Management from the Community College of Allegheny County, a Bachelor of Science degree from Carlow University, and is working toward a Master of Public Policy and Management degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She credits her education and experience as vital pillars in her growth and success.
In addition to her business and academic pursuits, Michelle serves as President of the Boards for The Pittsburgh Higherground Foundation and the Refocus Women’s Initiative, where she leads efforts to empower and uplift others through service, mentorship, and advocacy.
A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother raising her grandson, Michelle’s unwavering faith in God and love for her family inspire her to persevere through every challenge. She continues to rise with grace, gratitude, and purpose—building a lasting legacy of faith, leadership, and community impact.
