Brenda Tate to Retire from Police Force After 35 Years of Faithful Service

The City of Pittsburgh would not be the same without Detective Brenda Tate. She has worked as an officer of the law for the past 35 years and is retiring this year after 35 years with the Pittsburgh Police Force. A woman who has, on several occasions, provided protective services for First Lady Michelle Obama, as well as other visiting VIPS from the United States and abroad, began her career with five years as an officer with the Pittsburgh Housing Authority Police. She is retiring over three decades later as a Detective, specially assigned to the Pittsburgh Witness Protection Unit and the Pittsburgh Initiative to Reduce Violence.

During her long and storied career, Tate has taken on a number of different causes that demonstrate her commitment to the concept of Community and the depth of her dedication to serve and protect. Her involvement in community initiatives as a volunteer and advocate has served the whole community, so that her role is not just as a crime fighter, but a community builder. She has exemplified a dedication to prevention as a form of protection.

Tate is on the Board of a number of organizations, including the Centre Avenue and the YMCA . She is a Pennsylvania State Addiction Counselor, an Internationally Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor and mentors young people throughout the city.

She has received a number of awards related to her dedication to community service and law enforcement including the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Meritorious Service Award and the Pittsburgh Chapter of NOBLE (National Organization of Black Law Executives) Volunteer of the Year award. Tate has also received honors from the YWCA; the YMCA; Alpha Kappa Sorority Inc.; and the AUBA Ministers Wives and Widows Ministry.

A number of family, friends, co-workers and community will be on hand  at a retirement party for Ms. Tate will be honored at a celebration on June 1st at Marriott City Center in downtown Pittsburgh.

Known for her flare for fashion and elegant sense of style, Brenda has no plans on settling down. She will be fulfilling her life’s dream of becoming a florist and continuing her  love of travel  and spending more time with family and friends.
