Title: Playwright/Educator

Industry: Creative Arts

What role has the support of other women played in your success?

A variety of women ranging from 14 to 83 years old have been an influence, encouragement, and support in my journey to success. First and foremost, my mother has always instilled in me an “Each one, teach one mentality.” As a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., I learned from strong African American, intellectual women the importance of scholarship, sisterhood, public service, and how to persevere when faced with obstacles. I am also a teaching artist for women 14 to 18 years old. Our conversations and their feedback are always beneficial to my work.

Are you where you thought you would be, and how did you get here?

Yes, I am where I thought I would be at this point in my life. Earlier in my artistic journey, I was happy as a journalist. It felt good to see my name on bylines in news articles and magazines. In time, my writing career expanded to different levels—Poet, Playwright, Teaching Artist. I started consulting other creatives. I am where I am because I am a compassionate, committed, hard-working “edutainer.” This means that my goals are to share my creative skills so that whoever is experiencing my work leaves feeling informed and changed in some way.

4. What does the phrase “Sis, I see you!” mean to you?

When I hear the phrase, “Sis, I see you,” it means that someone has recognized me as an individual and acknowledged my talents, skills, and worth. A few people in my life grew up with me in Pittsburgh’s public housing in the Hill District. When I hear them say this phrase, they tell me they know my past hardships, struggles, and triumphs. They let me know that they are proud of my accomplishments and my representation as a successful African American woman, playwright, and educator.

On Friday, June 3, we will be honoring  19 other women who have been selected for their contributions to other women.  Here is the link to join us https://onyxwoman.com/2022-onyx-woman-leadership-awards-reception-registration/
