Name: Major Kristal Turner-Childs Title: Director, Bureau of Forensic Services Company: Pennsylvania State Police Industry: Law Enforcement Years in this Industry: 21
Why did you choose this profession?
My personal ethics are rooted in integrity, discipline, and altruism. I have a genuine concern for others regardless of their condition. I became a Pennsylvania State Trooper to protect and defend those in need.
What role has the support of other women played in your success?
I am a child of the sixties. I was born in rural North Carolina. My mother served the role of mother and father. Our pockets were poor, but my upbringing was rich. My mother, grandmother and great grandmother picked cotton. The law enforcement profession is white male dominated, so my female influences were few. However, those that came before me provided valuable insight and mentoring.
What does receiving this award mean to you?
I recognize that a person does not achieve any level of success completely on his or her own. We stand upon the shoulders of those who have gone before us. It is through that journey, along with support of family, friends and colleagues, that success is achieved.
What advice would you give to other women who want to go into your field?
You are needed. Diversity in law enforcement is necessary. Women are skilled communicators, which is a valued skill set in law enforcement. Women are less likely to use excessive force and are better at defusing violent encounters, thus lowering the percentage of deadly force encounters.
What would you tell other women about overcoming obstacles?
Be resilient. At the heart of resilience is a belief in oneself—yet also a belief in something larger than oneself. Resilient people do not let adversity define them. They find resilience by moving towards a goal beyond themselves.
On May 4, 2019, we will be honoring Kristal along with 18 other women who have been selected for their contributions to other women. Check back next week to see how you can register to attend.
