The Brown Mama Monologues is a celebration of motherhood and provides a solid, safe space for women of color to share their stories of tragedy, trauma, and triumph.

For 7 years, Muffy Mendoza, Founder and Executive Director of the Brown Mama Monologues, curated this platform to entertain, educate, and inspire audiences in a one-mic, one-story, one-speaker theme of powerful performances presented by women from various areas of the country.

On Saturday, May 6th, six women from Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Detroit will hit the stage at the Trust Arts Education Center (808 Liberty Ave., Downtown) to share their stories of motherhood through their unique lenses. These women have shared struggle, loss, gain, breakthrough, and hope during the process of building their 5 to 7-minute monologues.

“Pittsburgh’s Black community has long been hungry for social changes especially when it comes to how our basic social interactions are categorized and defined in the city.  The Brown Mama Monologues reflect that.  Black mothers are standing up and defining the act of parenting for themselves and putting the city on notice that their version, our version, of motherhood is valid, should be respected, and deserves support,” said Muffy Mendoza, executive producer of The Brown Mama Monologues and founder of Brown Mamas.

The Monologues allows months of rehearsals for the ladies in preparation for a ONE NIGHT ONLY performance in front of an audience of family, friends, and Brown Mama alumni.

In April 2021, Brown Mama Monologues entertained hundreds as mothers from the DMV took to their virtual stage in Bowie, being the first time this Pittsburgh show was presented outside of the city, starting a new legacy of performances for black and brown mama storytellers across the country.

The Brown Mama Monologues is fiscally sponsored by The Heinz Endowments and Jewish Healthcare Foundation.

The LIVE, IN-PERSON show will be Saturday, May 6th, at the Trust Arts Education Center, located at 808 Liberty Avenue in Downtown, Pittsburgh, at 6:00 PM.

Tickets to the show can be purchased at. bit.ly/2023Monologues, along with more information about the organization.
